Mechanical/Structural Design Engineering Apprentice
What made you choose a Marshall apprenticeship?
I saw the opportunities of an engineering apprenticeship at Marshall Aerospace as a natural progression of my practical learning theme, which would provide me with the best start in pursuing my passion - aerospace engineering - and enable me to realise my ultimate goal of qualification and certification in my chosen career.
What kind of tasks are you doing as an apprentice?
Through my journey as an engineering apprentice, I have seen multiple different areas of the business. Working on the hangar floor maintaining the aircraft allowed me to gain practical experience and an appreciation of the task at hand; enabling me to grow into a better design engineer. After completing my National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in 2018, I joined the engineering design office and began my engineering rotation through the various departments of personal interest including Systems Engineering, Composites and Electrical Integration.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The diversity of work and evolution of ideas are the aspects I most enjoy within my role. Whilst each day within the design office is different, the ability to learn from experienced engineers when generating an engineering design remains constant throughout.
What does a typical day involve?
A typical day at work involves meeting with a variety of people from different departments in order to progress the tasks assigned to me. Despite being a relatively new member of the Flight Dynamics team I am given a large amount of responsibility, as I am expected to manage my time effectively in order to ensure work is delivered on time and to budget.
What do you hope to do when you complete your apprenticeship?
After graduating from my apprenticeship in 2019, with a keen interest in aerodynamics, I gladly accepted the position as a Flight Dynamics Engineer. The ability to learn the aerodynamic fundamentals alongside experienced engineers provides the essential building blocks of a foundation which will enable me to seize my ultimate ambition of a dynamic career within the Flight Test arena.
