As part of our mission to increase productivity and innovation in the workplace, we are continuously looking at ways to help deliver this. The wellbeing of people within the workplace has a great impact on the success of a business, so we are taking the necessary steps to implement wellbeing courses into our learning programme to help keep you ahead of the curve.
At Marshall Centre, we believe in a holistic approach to people management, to support this we have appointed Jo Boyd as Head of Wellbeing. Jo has many years’ experience as an HR professional and is incredibly passionate about the Wellbeing agenda and the impact it has on the individual and the organisation to help maximise growth through the release of potential.
What is Wellbeing?
At Marshall Centre we believe that wellbeing is a state in which every individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
Why Wellbeing is incredibly valuable
In October 2017 the report, Thriving at Work was published. Written by Paul Farmer, chief Executive of Mind and Lord Dennis Stevenson, former chairman of HBOS.
The independent review into workplace mental health, commissioned by the Prime Minister in January 2017, found that 15% of workers have a mental health condition costing the UK employer £33bn per annum, whist sickness absences have increased also. The report also found that 48% of employees say their employer does not care about their wellbeing, yet 80% of employees feel positive when offered health and wellbeing benefits. This is supported by Deloitte’s quoted analyses of cases where investment has been made in improving mental health and shows a consistently positive return,” anything from £4 to £10 return on every £1 spent.
Finally, the Health and Safety Executive states that mental health is now the number one reason that employees are absent from work, although in many businesses the absence statistics do not reflect this, as employees are concerned about the stigma and consequences that accompany someone who is “suffering from mental health”.
Although the report is limited to the mental health aspect of wellbeing, this is only one, albeit instrumental element to wellbeing.
Mental Health Awareness Week
This week is the Mental Health foundation’s, Mental Health Awareness week. The chosen topic was due to be sleep, however due to the current world crisis they changed the topic to Kindness, so why did they do that?
