Wellness Wednesday – Why warm weather is good for your health.

The weather is finally warming up and the days are getting longer. We all know that the sun puts everyone in a good mood, but did you know it has several positive health benefits.

1. Sunlight relives stress.

Your body produces less of the stress hormone cortisol when you are in the sunshine, which means that we will all start feeling happier. We also produce Vitamin D when we are in sunlight and this helps to keep our bones strong and healthy

2. It can improve your mood.

The sun helps our brains produce feel-good hormones called serotonin, which improves your mood and makes you happier. You will notice that some experience seasonal affective disorder (winter blues) when we are exposed to less sun, so make the most of the natural light throughout the summer months.

3. It gets you active.

The UK is not known for its exotic weather so warm weather gets us outside, whether that is meeting friends or playing sports.

4. It is better for your heart and lungs.

Cold air is thicker, so it is harder to breathe, which means in the winter months you want to spend more time inside. Whereas warm weather make the air less dense and much easier to breath – perfect for your lungs.

5. Warm weather lowers blood pressure

When you are cold your blood vessels constrict. This means that your heart must work harder to pump blood around your body and this increases blood pressure. However, when you are warm, your blood vessels expand and this gives your heart a break by lowering your blood pressure.

So, get outside and make the most of the most of this amazing weather! Make sure you put on some sun screen so you do not burn and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water – be safe and sensible!
